Programming Psion Computers

An in-depth guide to the whole family of Psion palmtops

This is one book where the title more than does justice to it's contents - when Leigh Edwards says "in-depth" he means it.

The book covers every aspect of programming Psion's palmtop range: Psion 3x, Siena, Workabout and the Psion 5. There is a comprehesive guide to all the OPL commands and functions, a look at the various development environments: OPL, C++, OVAL and OPP, and the technology that drives the machines.

Accompanying the book is a CD full of software giving examples of many of the topics discussed in the book and is a valuable addition.

If I had one criticism it would be the order of the OPL functions and commands in the reference chapter. These are grouped together in like functions rather than alphabetically. If you are reading the book to learn about a particular topic then this is fine, however when you know the command you are looking for this is more than a little frustrating. This problem is alleviated somewhat by a comprehensive index.

Overall, this is an essential guide for anyone who is serious about writing software for a Psion palmtop and makes fascinating reading to anyone who is interested in the workings of their machine.
